Herbert Spencer Essay Example for Free
Herbert Spencer Essay He was a biologist first before he became a philosopher. Spencer was born on 1820 of April 27. He never had a formal education, instead he was being taught home by his parents. He was taught of math, social sciences and science and he was also taught of a variety of speaking languages which made him very intelligent and proficient. He was a typical, ordinary boy who loves to play around but unfortunately he easily gets sick and even he was an adult he easily catches illnesses. He had an insomnia which greatly affected him physically. He had his job when he was still on his teenage years in the railways and loved to write things. This contributed to what he has become and what great things he has achieved in his life. Herbert Spencer was born 1820- 2903, a British philosopher. He is noted for his effort to devise a philosophical system incorporating all scientific learning. In this ââ¬Å" synthetic philosophy,â⬠as he called it, Spencer applied to all branches of knowledge the principle of evolution, which he defined as the change of all things from simple to more complex forms. Spencer achieved particular renown as a social evolutionist. His conclusion that society evolves by the biological process of natural selection, a process for which he coined the phrase ââ¬Å"survival of the fittestâ⬠, was highly influential. Some of his ideas, however, were based on the largely discredited notion that acquired characteristics can play a role in evolution. Spencerââ¬â¢s first book, Social Statistics in 1850 , presented a theory of evolution predating Charles Darwinââ¬â¢s Origin of Species by nine years; unlike Darwin, however, Spencer, did not present scientific evidence to support his theory. After Darwinââ¬â¢s theory of natural selection was published, Spencer adopted it enthusiastically. He then wrote a series of volumes surveying biology, sociology, ethics, and psychology from an evolutionary point of view. These works brought him world recognition. The first book in the series, First Principles in 1862, presented his synthetic philosophy. It caused much controversy on the relation between science and religion. Spencer, an agnostic, rejected all theological systems as futile attempts to know the unknowable and concluded that knowledge can be gained only through the study of science. Spencer was taught by his father who was a schoolmaster and uncle who was a minister, and did not attend college. Although his real interest was science, for several years he worked as a civil engineer for an English railway and later as an editor for the Economist in 1848- 1853. He is an English Philosopher; he generalized evolutionary theory outside the confines of biology. He wrote the principle of Psychology in 1870-1872 and Sociology in 1873- 1896, he applied his encyclopedic knowledge to support his historicist concept of progress. The common origin of European Sociology was the Enlightenment. Different national traditions reacted to the enlightenment inheritance in different ways. The only British innovations were Spencerââ¬â¢s adaptation of Darwinââ¬â¢s model of Biological evaluation to provide explanations of societal change. In France, however, the conservative reaction to the French Revolution rejected atomistic models of society which is centered on the individual and questioned the validity of empirical inquiry. The man who added something new to this idea was only Herbert Spencer. He recognized that the Orthodox interpretation of society assumed but did not explain change. Spencer, however, did not abandon the ideas of the Enlightenment but regarded them in relation to a model of social change owing much to Darwinââ¬â¢s origin of species. He argued that societies were driven forward to more complex and higher forms by the struggle for the survival between individuals, and that the struggle had produced in Britain a Laissez Faire industrial society, which was a yet the highest social form. He was said to be the competitor of Charles Darwin. Survival of the Fittest and Evolution are the common terms being made known by this Victorian Biologistà who eventually became a philosopher. He viewed evolution as the same that he thought was not consistent. He had formulated different concepts and these are the Adaptation, Integration, Growth and Differentiation. Spencerââ¬â¢s remaining years were still focused on his thought of evolution of mankind and its outcome in the future. He was full of pessimism and thought that maybe mankind will not be able to survive. Herbert Spencer was idolize by many and many were influenced by him and they were Charles Darwin, Alfred Marshall, Henry Sidgwick, William Graham Sumner and many other sociologist and theorists. He became known duet to his Positivism and Evolutionism. He developed ideas which helped made other ideas which explained more of the existence of man. His greatest contribution to mankind was to think and explore more from their minds and not just settle in mediocrity. He wants us to be concerned of the society in which we are existing and the culture that we are following and passing on to other generations. In 1903, Herbert Spencer died. He died with dignity and great reputation, bringing with him the appreciation and love by the entire individualââ¬â¢s around him that time.

Natural Forces :: essays research papers
Natural Forces à à à à à A natural force is a power brought on by nature. Natural forces, unlike those of other powers, are uncontrollable. When a hurricane passes along the coast, a bolt of lightning strikes a rooftop, and a volcano erupts, these are all examples of natural forces. Natural forces can have devastating effects on wildlife, humans, and the earth itself. Our effects to resist these occurrences, our only way to cope with such devastating forces of nature are to observe, learn, and prepare ourselves for the worst. I believe that almost everyone has had at least one experience with natural forces. My experience of a tremendous force of nature occurred when my mother and I were in a car and all of a sudden a twister passed through the town. à à à à à Towards the end of 1989, my family and I were on vacation in Fort Myers, Florida. We drove from Trenton, New Jersey all the way to Florida where my grandfather lived. It was a long trip to undergo, especially being six years old and knowing that my father never stopped the car. By the time we arrived at Fort Myers, it was a beautiful sunny day. The wind was gusting enough to pull my hair back, and I was admiring the palm trees, coconuts, and lizards near the Gulf of Mexico. The first few days were nice, but little did I know that I would soon be caught in the middle of a twister. à à à à à I can clearly remember being in the car on a humid day with a little overcast. We were driving in the car when all of a sudden the wind started to pick up and it started raining a bit. Within five minutes, the weather progressed and there was so much wind blowing around the car that we could no longer hear the radio. I can remember when I saw a stop sign spinning in circles like a “merry-go-round'; with electrical problems. I do not remember how my mother got us home so quickly and where we were because all around us was a thick gray fog. However, all I can recall from that point on was sitting with my head in my lap in the back seat of the car. I never witnessed the true power of nature until this incident. à à à à à There was definitely a lesson to be learned from my experience that day in the car.

How Information Flows and is Used in an Organization Essay
Going through the three individual courses this week in regards to Data Storage, Security, Recovery and Disposal has given me a new set of eyes on how information flows and is used among an organizationââ¬â¢s computer infrastructure. What I found amazing about these processes is just how far we have come in these last few years when it comes to the technology of Digital Data. I will go over the individual topics that show the benefits, but also the drawbacks of such technology the way it is used at my work place, which is one of the largest Financial Institutions in the United States. Data Storage When we look back years ago when computers did not exist, it always puzzles me how is it that banks stored our information. I can only imagine the vast amounts of bank records in immense rooms that if you needed to research a certain transaction you did a few years back, even though Iââ¬â¢m sure paperwork was kept in a certain order, it would be a hassle to get to it. Once computers came into play in the recent years and no longer you had to go to your local branch to do all your business, no longer you needed to sign a Signature Card, things have simplified immensely. You can go into any bank location and if you needed a history of your recent transactions, statements from a few months or even yearsââ¬â¢ back, it is stored in the bankââ¬â¢s centralized mainframe where all data is stored. Data Security When we speak about Data Security today, we seem to forget how things were done back before computers came into play. One example I like to use is Frank William Abagnale Jr., who forged a vast amount of checks. (ââ¬Å"Frank Abagnale ââ¬â Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopediaâ⬠, n.d.). He was able to do allà that by finding the loopholes in our financial system and used it to his advantage. When you consider todayââ¬â¢s digital financial system with credit cards, debit cards, it is of major convenience to everyone that uses it. I can now buy an item through the Internet and the company selling it to me is able to immediately put a hold on the funds at my banking institution, creating a positive experience for both buyer (transaction was processed) and seller (funds were deposited into their account). However, also creates the risk of identify theft if not used properly. Data Recovery I think of Data Recovery something that was non-existant back in the days before computers existed. If you had mailed a check or sensitive financial information over to someone, if it was lost or stolen, there was no way to recover it had the person in possession either burned or ripped the information to pieces. In todayââ¬â¢s world, there are so many forms of legitimate back-ups that it doesnââ¬â¢t seem to be an issue anymore. If a certain hard disk where my information is kept ends up failing, there is a backup of it at another disk that will still tell me how much funds I have and my transaction history. And whatââ¬â¢s amazing is that all that happens seamlessly without my knowledge. Data Disposal Data Disposal is something that hasnââ¬â¢t really changed with the computer age. However, we are now disposing of the physical item that holds our information, instead of the information itself. Back when I signed my Signature Card at the bank and they kept it at that location, once they moved it over to a digital system, they disposed of that card and transferred it to a digital file in a hard disk drive. Now if they wanted to dispose of the same ââ¬Å"signature cardâ⬠they can write bits of data over where my signature card was or physically destroy the hard disk where it was stored. It does create the problem where if itââ¬â¢s not properly disposed, another person could retrieve my information. Conclusion In conclusion, I can say that how information is used and flows through an organization today depends how well the people in charge of the system itself are aware of the risks of not properly handling the different terms involved: Storage, Security, Recovery and Disposal. With most organizationsà today using computer information systems as opposed to paper how it was used years ago the terms have largely stayed the same, however, with a different focus on how the data is now handled. Racial Equality And The Civil War - 1868 Words
Since the declaration of independence when slavery was legal, to the civil war when slavery was outlawed, and then to the civil rights movement where African Americans fought for equal rights, one prevalent issue has proven to be interminable. Although this issue has had different terms to describe it throughout our nationââ¬â¢s history, it hasn t changed. Beginning with slavery, then segregation, and now modern day racism, the core issue of racial equality never seems to be resolved. There have been countless laws, protests, and acts enforced throughout many years of human history that seem to only temporarily subside the problem. Although this proves to be true is most cases, there have also been laws, protests, and acts created andâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦During the same time, a partially black man tried to sit on a white area of a train, when he was arrested, he took it to court. The supreme court ruled in Plessy v Ferguson that although the 14th amendment made African A mericans and whites equal under law, it didnââ¬â¢t mean they had to be equal in society as long as their facilities were equal. This court case made ââ¬Å"separate but equalâ⬠constitutional. This led to the birth of two types of segregation. De facto segregation was one of them, which was all segregation that wasnââ¬â¢t a result of laws, such as denying a black person housing or a job. The other is de Jure Segregation, which was all segregation that was a result of the law. The best example of de Jure Segregation is Jim Crow laws, enforcing racial segregation in the south. As a result of not gaining equal rights as whites, black leaders put their heads together to resolve the problem. Booker T. Washington, an african american leader, urged African Americans to move slowly towards radical progress to win white Americansââ¬â¢ respect for full voting and citizenship rights. He argued that not being forceful and aggressive in the approach, could win their superiors over. W.E.B. Du Bois, also an african american leader, had the same end goal as Booker. T. Washington, however had a much different approach. Rejecting Booker T.
